U.S. HOMEOWNERS EXTEND WARM WELCOME TO FINNISH TRADITION

Al Williamson has the fervor of a convert.
"I use my sauna probably three days a week," said Williamson, a home builder who discovered saunas about 10 years ago.
At first he put saunas in the homes he built, but he didn't see the need for one personally. Then, when he built a new home for himself in 1994, he tucked a sauna in the basement near a game room. SPEAKING OF FINLAND...

TOILETS TEST CAUSED QUITE A STIR

A study completed late last year by the NAHB Research Center has caused quite a stir in the toilet manufacturing industry.

Two public utilities groups, Seattle Public Utilities and the East Bay Municipal Utility District (Oakland, Calif.), commissioned the study. NAHB researchers tested 49 different models of 1.6-gpf fixtures. Full results of the testing -- in which three Toto units had the lowest indexes -- were posted on the Research Center's Web site in late October. However, within days, they were removed.

BUILDING CODE PROBLEMS, FOR A CHANGE...

There are now two competing national model building codes -- the International Building Code developed by the International Code Council (ICC), and the NFPA 5000 Building Construction and Safety Code developed by the National Fire Protection Association.
